What is Defibrillation and how do Defibrillators work?

Defibrillation is a specific medical treatment in which a defibrillator delivers electrical energy to an affected hearth, in case of cardiac arrests. Defibrillators work on the principal of shock discharge wherein an affected heart is charged with a particular quantum of electrical shock which re-instates the rhythm of the heart. Normally defibrillation is associated with sudden cardiac arrest; wherein the heart starts to beat dangerously fast due to excessive excitement in the body. Such sudden tension in the cardiac tissues reduces the efficiency of the heart and its pumping, which ultimately leads to a cardiac arrest or pause. To overcome this state of cardiac pause de-fibrillation is required to reinstate the heart’s normal breathing pattern.

Often, defibrillation is associated with the re-start of the heart which is not right, literally. There is a difference between restarting and reinstating the heart. The former means to completely start up the mechanism of the heart, wherein the latter means to revamp the rhythm of the heart. During a sudden cardiac arrest, the electrical shock from the defibrillators depolarizes a critical amount of the heart’s muscles and stops the excessive beating to reinstate the normal rhythm of the heart.

Defibrillation is done by trained medical technicians who ideally work in the cardiac department of hospitals and are effluent with the drastic medical conditions of the heart. Usually the defibrillators are used along with the Eco-Cardiogram machines wherein the electrical charge is discharged through wired pads and paddles connected to the defibrillators.

Defibrillation is ideally required for patients who have a poor heart condition with ample cardiac fault history. However, with technological advancements the several types of defibrillators as available with hospitals and clinics are –

  1. Manual External Defibrillators(Basic Type)

  2. Manual Internal Defibrillators.

  3. Semi-automated external Defibrillators

  4. Automated external Defibrillators

  5. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators

  6. Wearable cardiac defibrillators.

Defibrillation are considered to be fundamental medical devices nowadays and should always be resorted to and made available for necessary patients.
